Night sky over a frozen lake. These Black Tourmaline palms are inky black, crossed with a fine web of silvery crackle lines that catch the light as they turn.

Black Tourmaline is the first stone most people reach for when they need protection. Think of it as the bouncer of the crystal world, known for shielding your energy from the moods, demands and heavy vibes of the people and places around you, which is why so many keep a piece by the front door or in a work bag. It’s deeply grounding, pulling scattered energy back down into the body, and it’s prized for turning looping, worst-case thoughts into something calmer and more practical. Many also keep it beside a laptop or phone as a buffer against the day’s electronic static. On the mystical side, it’s a classic for psychic protection and for clearing a space before ritual or meditation. Black tourmaline is also called schorl, and the name tourmaline comes from the Sinhalese turmali, a word Sri Lankan gem traders used for mixed parcels of colorful stones.
